Back in 2011 astronomers were amazed when NASA’s Kepler spacecraft discovered a planet orbiting a double star system.
The existence of an alien world, where two suns set over the horizon instead of just one, like the fictional planet Tatooine in the movie Star Wars – became a scientific reality.
This planet was also real.
Tatooine, as we know, is the name of Luke Skywalker’s home world in the science fiction movie Star Wars. In this case, the planet it not thought to be habitable. It is a cold world, with a gaseous surface, but like Tatooine, it circles two stars.
Now Kepler has discovered a whole system of planets orbiting a double star. The star system, known as Kepler-47, is located 4,900 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.
