Everyone knows our body’s need about ½ an ounce of water, per day for each pound they weigh. (For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 oz. /day -[this is: 150 divided by 0.5]). What about the quality of the water we drink? Many people drink filtered and bottled water. Have you considered alkaline water? Alkaline water is filtered water with a pH in the alkaline range. Alkaline (“Basic”) is the opposite of acidic.
A balance between acid/base is very important for the body. Acids and bases are measured on the pH scale. This scale goes from 1 to 14 where a pH of 7 is neutral. It’s important to note that each number on the pH scale represents a tenfold difference from adjacent numbers. In other words, a pH of 6 is one hundred times more acidic than pure water at a pH of 7.
The pH of pure water is “neutral” at 7pH. Water is a compound composed of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom and is the chemical formula H2O. Water is a unique type of compound in our universe because it changes its shape depending on its circumstances. This is partly why it is so important to life. If you are not getting enough water or if more than 40% of the food you eat digests-down into an acid, it is very difficult for your body to remain pH-balanced. Our body’s function best at a pH of about 7.4; which is the healthy pH of our blood. If our pH goes below 7.35 we suffer from acidosis and if our pH is above 7.45 we suffer from alkalosis. It is relatively easy for our body’s to go into a slightly acidic state but very unhealthy for the body to remain in the acidic state for long. When the body goes into the slightly acidic state our immune system function depresses. This allows the body to get slightly sick to significantly sick with diseases like cancer.
Keeping your system more basic (alkaline) has many benefits. Some advantages of keeping your system alkaline are improved endurance; easier weight loss; stops many bacteria and other pathogens and parasites from living in and on you. Maintaining an alkaline body system has also been shown to help your body remove toxins and helps lower the risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones. The most important discovery is: there is growing evidence that when one keeps her/his body on the alkaline side, cancer cells cannot grow!
Drinking alkaline water is a quick and easy way to balance your pH system. There are many ways to get alkalized water. There are some expensive purifiers and filters out there and some less expensive ones that work well, out there too. Or, you could stop by a water store that sells alkalized water, for about 50-75 cents per gallon. You can also find pH 9 water on the grocery shelf. Make sure that whether you filter and/or alkalize your own water, or buy it already filtered and/or alkalized, that you add back in the natural mineral content.
What pH is safe? There are pH setting options on most alkalizing units. It is safe to drink up to and including 9.5 pH water. The U.S. Olympic training teams used pH 9 water during their development, training and trials the years preceding the Olympics.
Benefits of drinking pH 9 water: Everyone needs to add some pH9 alkaline drinking water to his/her daily intake. Alkalized water offsets the acid forming foods you may be eating. It also helps your body’s immune system kill any cancer cells that are there. Water with a pH of 9 actually allows your body to hydrate more efficiently because alkalized water’s molecules are slightly condensed, so absorb into the system better. Being better hydrated allows your body to work better all the way around. Your body is better able to eliminate toxins and the cellular energy system functions more efficiently. Alkalized water also allows your body to get rid of free radicals more easily. Free radicals are byproducts of certain foods and of your metabolism that cause aging and dysfunction of the cells and body. Drinking alkaline water will even eliminate heartburn and help a hangover resolve sooner.
