Nine supporters of Julian Assange have been ordered to pay almost $150,000 in sureties because they did not persuade the WikiLeaks founder to give himself up.

The 41-year-old Australian remains holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London as he continues to avoid being extradited to Sweden to face questioning over sexual assault allegations.

He denies any wrongdoing and fears he could be transferred to the United States to face criminal charges over the online publication of thousands of diplomatic cables.

Mr Assange skipped bail when he entered the embassy, where he was subsequently granted asylum.
