AVATAR ALIENS COULD BE FOUND “ANY DAY NOW” CLAIM SCIENTISTS
Scientist have claimed aliens like those in hit film Avatar could be found “any day now”.
Space boffins suggest the moons of recently-discovered planets are the most likely places to discover alien life.
Having studied 15 potential planets within the “habitable zones” of stars, astronomers found they were inhospitable gaseous worlds like Jupiter or Neptune.
But like Pandora, the fictional moon in James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar, the planets’ could be orbited by moons on which there are forests, oceans and living creatures.
“Jupiter has several large water-rich moons. Imagine dragging that system into the comfortably warm region where the Earth is,” said Dr Chris Lintott, from Oxford University.
“If such a planet had Earth-size moons, we’d see…worlds with rivers, lakes and all sorts of habitats: a surprising scenario that might just be common.
“It may be that the most common habitable worlds are moons around Jupiter and Neptune-size planets rather than rocky planets as in our own solar system.”
And experts reckon alien life could be found in the very near future, as they continue to study regions that can successfully hold liquid surface water as part of the international Planet Hunters project.
“I can’t wait for the day when astronomers report detecting signs of life on other worlds instead of just locating potentially habitable environments. That could happen any day now,” said Dr Ji Wang, from Yale University.
