As I began dabbling into alternative healing services to repair my body after the car accident, I was introduced to essential oils. I was thoroughly impressed with the effects, especially for pain relief.  When we decided to become an authorized distributor for the doTerra line, we began diving into the benefits and approaches with using oils on the body.  Let me share some basic information on how essential oils work with our bodies first.

HOW CAN WE USE ESSENTIAL OILS?

essential oil dropsThe skin’s permeability allows essential oils to be rapidly absorbed into the body. Just a few drops of essential oils go a very long way because they of their concentration (it is suggested no higher than 5%). Massaging and heat applications can also assist in better absorption rates. But you must know which oils can be applied directly to the skin and which can not. Exercise caution on applying essential oils if you are pregnant or if you are using them on children or infants. Also, most citrus oils can possibly cause phototoxicity when you topically apply an essential oil and then go out into the sun (you can even get a sunburn). This happens most often with certain citrus oils, such as orange, lime, lemon, bergamot, and angelica. For sensitivity to oils, click here.

Of course, oils will also enter the body through the olfactory system or cells related to the sense of smell. Airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and immediately break through the brain barrier, giving the body access to the beneficial effects of oils almost instantaneously!  The limbic system is a receptor site within the brain that “receives” the molecules and effects all sorts of urgent activities such as stress balancing, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate monitoring, memory accessing, and hormone balancing.  It is suggested that even when you experience deja vu’, it is directly related to you remembering a certain smell!  These airborne molecules also travel to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system as well. It is usually recommended to smell the desired essential oil off an on for 15 minutes per hour.

You can ingest certain essential oils however you really must know which ones are safe for internal use. Toxicity of the liver and kidneys is a consideration as well as how the oils interact or possibly counteract pharmaceutical drugs. Frankly, this is one of the number one reasons I work with essences and oils because you don’t have to be potentially blocked by the sluggishness of the stomach and its digestion in order for the body to absorb the oils benefits.

As you can see there are many ways the body can “receive” the oils encoded information.

WHERE DO WE APPLY ESSENTIAL OILS?

The absolute best place to put essential oils is on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands because the feet and hands are a major connecting point to ALL the organs and systems in the body.

Some of the other suggested areas are the sweat glands, hair follicles, genitals, head, and armpits.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN TAKING ESSENTIAL OILS

  • The amount you take is the most important factor in essential oil safety. Don’t overdo it!
