Military police, Whitehall officials and retired border staff are on standby to prevent Olympic chaos this week as militant union leaders prepare a 24-hour walkout.

Ministers yesterday discussed detailed contingency plans to contend with industrial action planned for Thursday by the Public and Commercial Services union in a row over jobs and pay.

It is expected to involve staff including UK Border Agency workers walking out on what is forecast to be the busiest day in Heathrow’s history.
