Given the dire situation in Syria, the country’s opposition leader has opted to accept dialogue with the government, saying he is ready to meet with Assad’s deputy.

Moaz al-Khatib, president of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, urged President Bashar Assad on Monday to respond positively to the call for dialogue.

“The regime must take a clear stand (on dialogue), and we say we will extend our hand for the interest of people and to help the regime leave peacefully,” he said in comments to Al Jazeera.
