These days, with all of our attention so focused on the enormous challenges we’re facing—from climate change to the global economic crisis—it’s always a revelation to me to consider how much progress we’ve made as a species even just in the past two centuries. Think about how much blood was spilled in the American Civil War only 150 years ago to free the slaves, and now we almost take it for granted that we have a black First Family in the White House. Moreover, the dramatic change in our standard of living, the rise in the quality of life for so many people today would be unimaginable to even the well-to-do elite in the 1800s. And that’s why I wonder why it seems that so few people these days notice how much our world has changed and continues to change for the better.
